She holds a BA (Hons) from UCT, a Post-graduate Certificate in Education from the University of London and an LLB from Wits. She has spent many years as an internal ombudsperson and is a specialist in the field of consumer protection. Her current focus is on protecting the rights of asylum seekers and refugees including through identifying and taking action on systemic issues which prevent such rights from being realised
